Thinking About Lying Down Foals

As you've seen I've been chalky hunting lately and I spent way too much time staring at a black appy lying down foal trying to decide if I thought it was chalky. I ended up buying it because it was only $20 so really self, just get it, even though there is probably a 1% chance it actually is. The black appaloosa scratching and lying down foals are models that absolutely should exist in chalky but I have never actually seen one and only heard maybe vague rumors of them.

This one sure checked a lot of boxes for me in the photos though so fingers crossed! Since I was staring at minute details I got my own examples out for comparison and it was fun to check them out! The lying foal certainly comes in pearly! They are also notoriously difficult to tell in photos, especially with the spots, but I've been lucky to find a few over the years and my current one is super pearly and I love it. They don't have the same wow factor as other pearlies but they're still really cool. The scratching foal on the other hand maybe exists in pearly? Also super rare if so.

I also have this one lying around (haha, lying around) that was in a lot I bought recently for the scratching foal that had a large sticker. It is a nice early example with no USA stamp, which also checks out with the large sticker on her counterpart, to date them to 1969 or early 1970. This one is also nice and smooth and doesn't have the "mold pimples" that this run is notorious for and which you can see on my pearly.

The USA stamp was added to most Breyer models in and around 1970 as was required by law to denote products made in the USA. It's a great way to check and see when your Breyer models were made, particularly for some of the early regular runs that spanned many years and even decades of production.

Another of my favorite early ones is the vintage red roan. This is such an iconic early Breyer color and I loved finding this one with a large blue ribbon sticker too. I've since found all the scratching foals with their matching large stickers, but I still need the lying black appy and buckskin to complete my sets.

I also have this modern example from the Fun Foals treasure hunt in 2009. I love this particular style of modern Breyer roaning as well (not so much a fan of the white splattered mist they do these days) so I knew I wanted to get her to go with the vintage one. It ended up being one of the rarer foals but these days it feels like they are all pretty rare. That was one of the most fun Breyer "events" that has happened in my collecting lifetime and I sure miss doing the treasure hunts of all flavors!
So I think I now have five chalky "maybes" on their way to me including the very unlikely black appy lying down foal - I will report back next week and we can see how I did, LOL. I'll have to leave it at that for now unless some super obviously chalky bargains pop up because I also just blew my Breyerfest budget on an unrelated but exciting grail! It's not exactly a "buyers market" out there yet in terms of prices but it is in the sense of all the amazing rarities that keep popping up for sale. I have been holding off on most of my sales waiting for BF but I might have to list a few things early too.
